Toys for the Masses
Posted By: Louis Wu <halo@bungie.org>Date: 4/1/04 6:13 a.m.

So there's this fun new toy BOLL made - and it's just for you guys. Here's the idea. Stuntmutt created One One Se7en, and gave us a medium through which anyone could make fun of Halo, or the characters therein, simply by cutting and pasting his artwork and filling in some new text. However, doing this required a couple of things that aren't available to everyone:

  • An image-editing program (for the cut-and-paste)
  • An image host (so that people can see the end product)

BOLL took care of the first part, by creating 30 individual One One Se7en panels (well, actually, stealing them from Stuntmutt's work, but we won't get technical here) with blank speech bubbles; you pick the one that best suits your comment needs.

Then he took care of the second part, by leveraging the power of php and gd to add text to pictures, on the fly. (We're hosting it for him, because 1) it's designed for use on our forum, and it's only right that we should provide the bandwidth, and 2) newer versions of gd don't do gif any more.) To play with it, visit the Automagix 117 Stripz page, and see what's what.

To use the files here, all you have to do is create your image, and then copy the URL for it to this forum, and put it in an image tag. Here's an example:

Pick, say, strip 1, and give it a caption of 'It was THI-I-I-I-I-S big!' Click 'Generate Strip!' You'll get the following page:

http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/forum_magix/caption.php?strip=1&txt=It+was+THI-I-I-I-I-S+big%21

Now, to include this as a LINK in the forum (something people have to click on to see), you're done; but if you want to actually include the IMAGE ITSELF, so that someone opening the forum post SEES THE PIC, add this URL to an img tag, like so:

<img src="http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/forum_magix/caption.php?strip=1&txt=It+was+THI-I-I-I-I-S+big%21">

The end result will look like this:

It's that simple. No more need for image hosting... no more need for strip editing. Pick your panel, add your text, create your URL. You're done. (And oh, yeah, give a hearty round of applause to both BOLL, for making the tool, and Stuntmutt, for creating the artwork, and the inspiration to use it!)
