Hit an Elite in the back if they've still got plenty of shields and you can keep shooting at the shields after. This is most viewable on PoA when the Elites facing away from you as a scripted part and you're meant to hit their back.

Sometimes a marine runs over and pops an extra couple shots, and the shields fizz.
