Cortana was away from Dr. Halsey for only a little while. She wasn't exactly chock full of life experiences. Do A.I.'s even change in personality?

Yeah, the books aren't a very good source for everything. In the Fall of Reach they obviously couldn't do basic math. The Cortana letters don't coincide with these either. It describes a place for forty, implying the Spartans, but the Pillar of Autumn only had room for thirty. Furthermore in the meeting they had then said out of the successful Spartans, three died and one was too injured to continue active operations, which means there were only 29 Spartans that could've been on the Pillar of Autumn, since they were all there for the mission. In the same meeting, Master Chief counted 24 people in the room, I'm not sure if that included himself, and three weren't there that were on missions deep in space. So that means there were about 27 or 28 Spartans and 1 or 2 that aren't accounted for.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but that means you really can't trust them at all.
