I purchased a copy of CGW Nov 99, issue 184 from a local grocery store. The cover
sports the image of a Marine pointing that laser desig at you (this is also one of the
images found at Bungie's revamped Halo page(s). The issue comes in a clear plastic
wrapper and inside is found ONE AOL CD. The article is the same one found at some
nearby Halo pages. However, NOTE THAT THE HALO AVI IS NOT ON THE CD,
at least not unless you have to install AOL first.
One day later, I was in that same store and spotted another copy of CGW Nov 99, issue
184. This time the front image was different. It shows an image from another game;
not Halo. The wrapper is partially black opaque and it indicates that there are multiple
CDs and a look at Halo. Rather than whine about getting ripped off on that first mag, I
decided to retain the first mag AND then I purchased the second mag with the intent of
letting you'all know what's going on. Other than the cover, the printed matter itself
seems to be the same issue. The Halo article and pix are the same. Inside the wrapper
are not two, but three CDs. That AOL coaster and two other CDs containing various
games, demos and AVI's. Regardless of the platform you are using, you should be able
to spot the AVI on the CD that comes in the Freespace 2 jacket. If QT4 is your default
player, the AVI icon appears as a QT file called MAIN.AVI and I must say that the
quality off the CD is better than the same file downloaded, for whatever reasons. Drag it
to your HD before playing for best performance.
Bottom line: Mac OR PC, get the one in the opaqued wrapper and make sure it mentions
more than one CD. I do not know if there are any more such "identical" issues besides
the two I have. NOTE: These are BOTH available simultaneously.
Happy comparison shopping :)
