These guys are marines. They most likely have a unit number. 723rd seems very possible. Exepcily when you consider the designe of the top of the flag. Anyone notice any simularitys to Roman and Nazi flag heads? The Romans origionated designes like this, and each legion had a specialized flag staff head which was each legions emblem. I belive you will find this exact same one somewhere in the history books if you look hard enough.
And want to know what it is? Looks like a cresent moon right? Probobly not. More than likely is a set of bull horns. Most of the Mediteranian was heavely influenced by the ancihent Minoans who worshiped the bull (among other things) Symbolic bull horns can be found throught the mediteranian because of this.
The Nazi's also used this shape on some of their flag staff heads just because it looked good in a millitary parade. Also the Nazi's kind of wanted the link with the mighty roman empire.
But I think we are looking at the 723rd Marine's maybe even the 732rd Legion.
