In submarine terms, a "Boomer" is a boat that holds sea launched ballistic missiles. And we all know how much of a sucker Durandal was for orbital bombardment...

Another point I heard someone bring up a while ago (don't remember who or where) is the fact that when we first see the scoutship in one of the chapter screens of M1, it is all rounded and smooth yet when it becomes Boomer, the terminal picture shows it to have sharp, defined corners and edges...
