In Response To: Re: Does the marine know he is a cyborg? (Thomas)

: Although I'd agree that the marine is not conscious of his status as a cyborg
: and that those memories are actively repressed, I would submit that he is
: on some level aware that there is something not quite right with regard to
: his place in humanity. Clearly he's not consciously aware of it -- at
: least, not at first -- but unconsciously I believe it is even likely that
: he is.

: It's ironic that you brought up the point about how he wouldn't find his
: distinctiveness funny, because that was one of the things that made me
: think that he perhaps on some unconscious level is aware that he is a
: cyborg, those two works: "it's funny." Just as he wouldn't find
: anything wrong with it were he sure he was a cyborg, just the same he
: probably wouldn't find it odd were he confident of his humanity. Without
: those two words I wouldn't have given it a second thought. I'm unique in
: some ways. You're unique in some ways, I'm sure. I don't find that
: uniqueness "funny." I don't find it at all strange that I am the
: way I am. I am the way I am because I am. (How's that for tautological
: nonsense?) The fact that it does to him suggests to me that he finds
: something wrong with that fact, that he senses there is something
: unexplained about it.

: Okay, fine, that's pretty weak. However, in the manual text there are
: allusions to forgotten memories, thoughts dancing just on the edge of the
: conscious mind. Maybe they're repressed or artifically supressed memories,
: maybe they're the relics of the Mjolnir's programming. Whatever it is, I
: myself believe that the knowledge is somewhere in the mind of the marine.
: Hidden, perhaps, but there nevertheless.

: That's an interesting point about him being bigger and stronger even more so
: than the other nine cyborgs, but I wouldn't say that means he's a
: different model. Cybernetic organisms also have an organic component, so
: maybe this organic component is just superior. Who knows?

: You know, the more I think about it, there are more questions than answers. I
: never really thought about the other nine...

: Consider, the nine cyborgs "acting together ... were able to
: single-handedly turn back the latter stages of the Pfhor assault."
: How were they identifiable as cyborgs while you were not? I've walked
: through plenty of liquified remains of Mjolnirs and I've never seen any
: computer chips. ;) How did they know to band together? I'd imagine it was
: internal programming (they'd perhaps perceive it as instinct), but it's
: one of those loose ends.

I feel the marine always knew he wasn't human. I mean how many humans can fit an AI's mind inside their head (considering thats true) I believe more that the marine wasn't sure what he was in the begining of the game (mostly in the manual) but soon began to realize what he was.
