: Hmm, parallel universes eh? I like it ;)
: But what if two random events occur at the same instant in time? In two of
: the resulting universes the player dies, and in two he survives, which one
: would the buffer choose?

The other universe would not be chosen. If it were, then the second time through we'd ALWAYS succeed, and we don't. Rather, there is no outright selection process, but another timeline is selected at random as the universe is destroyed, and we simply try again. At least, that's how I interpret Mark's theory.

Here's another theory that I hope satisfies everyone's concerns without the need to continually destroy the universe.

Perhaps patterns are more of an ephemeral quality than the concrete pattern of matter. Patterns could be more connected to events rather than to states. As you contaminate the universe through your interactions, that matter becomes infected with your event pattern, as you have had an effect on it.

When your pattern is restored, those elements of your pattern that extend to other things and other beings is also restored with the rest of the pattern, which would explain why aliens you kill after a pattern save remain alive, switches aren't thrown, etc.

Yeah, sure, fine, there's nothing in physics to suggest such an "event pattern infection" takes place, but modern ideas are pretty far out there. Who knows what they'll think of next? :)

Anyone care to discuss how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?
