| In Response To: Re: Pattern Buffers... the tru7h (Friend of a Friend) Ah, but you;'re forgetting the "many worlds" theory of probability. This theory states that whenever an event occurs whose outcome cannot be predetermined, the continuity splits into multiple parallel universes such that there is one for every possible outcome of the event. Therefore, everything the Marine does that cannot be exactly predicted will caused such a split. Since every projectile in Marathon has a random error attached to it, we can define "something shoots at the Marine" as a random event. Since Marathon discards the player's state once he is killed and makes no change to the gameplay when his health changes, we can consider "alive" and "dead" to be the only two possible outcomes of the event. Therefore, whenever something shoots at the Marine, there are two (more) universes from that point on: One in which he died, and one in which he didn't. Now, all a pattern buffer has to do is wait for the Marine to die. If he does, then the pattern buffer occupies the universe in which he died, but there is another universe out there in which he lived. The pattern buffer has to ensure that the "live" universe is the "real" outcome of the event, and since it knows it is in the "dead" universe it can force there to be only one outcome of the event by destroying the universe. The "dead" timeline is terminated, and the "live" timeline is what really happened. Who says games aren't educational ;P | |
