I believe that Infinity is an alternate timeline--or, rather, a collection of alternate timelines--like an old dream...Notice that early on, you're working for Tycho, who tells you that he's had you in cold sleep for 17 years, not Durandal (I think, it's been a while). So in that timeline, you were taken from the Marathon by Tycho instead of Durandal. I believe that Infinity takes place mostly at the same time as M2, just in several different timelines, and eventually your job is to prevent the W'rkncacnter (sp?) from getting out.
