Marathon's ship design was a frequent topic of discussion on Usenet back in '94 and '95. Here's one post I dug up.

I keep bringing this up, but how does a switch 20 ft up on the

wall constitute "good design?" If the only way to trigger it is to

lob a *grenade* or fire a few *terawatts* at it...

Same for the switches that are dug in so deep into the wall you need

a fusion blast to trigger it.

Triggering a switch with a gunblast isn't necessarily bad, as long

as one can see how the switches could be reached otherwise, and the

shooting from a distance is done out of convenience or necessity.

In Dark Forces, you can shoot through a window to activate a switch

in a security room so you can get through another door. However,

those switches can be easily operated by the Imperial soldiers at

human height level.

Enter Marathon. In the room with 7 platforms, the switch that

raises the middle platform must be at least 20 ft up on the wall.

Pray tell, how does a normal person under normal circumstances

without a weapon activate that switch?
