BREAKING THE BARRIER

Part Two: Exception To The Rule

by Raśl Eduardo Bonilla

(Based on concepts by Larry and Andy Wachoski & Greg Kirkpatrick)

"So this is the Matrix" said the old potential to himself while looking around the ship's deck, amused. Anyone else would have been scared or at least nervous, considering that the ship was under attack. But not him. He believed he was inside a simulation and there was no real danger. Every time the crippled ship was shaken by an explosion, he though: "This feels so real!" and kept smiling.

Midas, the ship's captain, didn't share the old potential's excitement. The danger was real for him and the rest of the crew, and if they died, it was going to be his fault.

This was supposed to be a routine flight. His ship, the Marathon, was a small hovercraft used to transport supplies between Zion and a handful of outposts. Even though it was armed with two turrets, neither the Marathon or it's crew were prepared for battle. Midas overweight problem prevented him to fight the machines within the Matrix, as his heart couldn't stand the physical stress. Loop was a great combat pilot until he lost an eye in battle and was allowed to kept piloting that cargo ship due to lack of personnel. Sirius and Recoil were assigned to the Marathon as a punishment after repeated disciplinary problems.

And Magik, the ship's doctor and newest crew member, was another rejected from the front line, for being too nervous. Although she was freed from the Matrix before she could finish medicine school, she was quite good as a doctor and for a short period of time considered a miracle performer. Then she had to attend the wounded during an attack and fainted. All she was allowed to treat from that day were scratches and other minor medical situations on the Marathon and the outposts they visited. Midas, nevertheless, trusted her and believed that as long as there was no immediate danger, the Marathon's doctor was as good as the they come.

During the four years he had been captain of that ship, Midas never encountered a sentinel and believed it was going to be the same until the end of the war.

He realized how lucky he and his crew have been all those years when they visited Outpost Chicago F9, a few days ago. They got no response to their request to dock, but naively continue to flew through the entrance tunnel until they reach the gates. The defense cannons where gone and there was this big hole between the two closed gates which let them see in horror the massacre that was going on inside.

Midas made two wise decisions. The first one was the order of turn back and fly away. Loop and Sirius protested.

"This is not a combat ship," Midas replied. "If we get in there, we'll die too!"

Loop did what he was ordered to, angry. In no time, a swarm of sentinels where chasing them.

Midas then made his second and most wise decision: instead of returning to Zion and exposing the secret tunnels leading there, he ordered Loop to fly deep into the sewers of the former city, knowing the small hovercraft wasn't capable of outrunning the sentinels. Loop seized this long awaited opportunity to prove the crew and himself that being a great pilot is not a matter of how many eyes you have left, but how strong your will still is.

Using maneuvers he haven't employ since his days on the Viking, Loop managed to lost the sentinels.

But the Marathon was far from being save. The sentinels continue to patrol the area, waiting for the moment when the humans would reactivate the ship's power. The crew knew this too, so they waited for the sentinels to gave up and the sentinels did the same thing for them. Time passed by and the Midas was confident they would win; thanks to the supplies they still had on cargo, they could survive longer than the sentinel could last without recharging their batteries.

At some point the sentinels understood what the humans were up to or they simply ran out of patience and decided to draw them out with bombs. Because they didn't know where to shoot at, the sentinels threw their bombs in all directions. This caused many sections of the sewer to collapse, taking down several sentinels as well, but they continue to launch their bombs at full capacity. It seems the sentinels didn't care being destroyed as long the humans died too.
