I'd like to go back through marathons terminals and do some research before having my say... But I do seem to remember a great deal of unrest in bungies 26th century universe. I'd imagine the food riots on mars would also mirror the situation on earth - If A colony world doesnt have enough resources to sustain itself comfortably imagine what overpopulated Earth would be like. The UESC seems to be quite an overbearing dictatorial (I love inventing words!) kind of government, given the approach they take to keeping their populous under order (indiscriminate killing... witness the food riots and Thermopyle). I'd also guess that for a world wide government such as the UESC to come into being in the first place would have required some sort of major global catastrophe or negative situation to occur - I might be wrong on this last one, the beggining of the UESC sounds like something that would be covered in a terminal, but I can't remember.
