On the subject of the arm... Combined with the seed imagery elsewhere in the final screen (there's a chat log with ydnar on the story page somewhere where he says it's a plant), I've always seen it as a sort of rebirth. The Marine has become the ultimate warrior, he has become such an important force in events across the galaxy, and he's finally mastered all of his Jjaro powers. So at the end of the universe (or possibly in the next one, a la Galactus) he reaches the next level, and becomes much closer to the Jjaro themselves.
