Glad I don't have any investment in the Marathon Community™. Good luck handling the immigration wave.

If I had the time and dedication, it'd probably be fun to see if I could stoke the drama by warning outsiders about how Marathon fans are Entitled Toxic Manbabies who Can't Accept Change; while reminding you guys that "nobody's forcing you to play the new game". Then there's the classic "if you only like the first three Marathon games, you're not a Marathon fan, you're just a fan of those games". And I wonder whether there's any mileage in "you're not fan of Marathon, you're just a fan of the fandom".

I briefly wondered whether there'd really be much drama. Doom III and 2016 didn't kill the "classic" Doom communities. Is there really a lot of active story discussion to derail? Aren't mod, map and scenario development the main activities, same as with classic-Doom? I doubt that an online-only game will be very moddable, so I don't see much development effort being drawn away.

On the other hand, this is the Story Forum, so it's only fair for people to start using it to discuss the new story. That'll lead to some people criticizing it (and its delivery method) and other people defending it. And the critics will presumably emphasize the depth/complexity/greatness of the original story by contrast. When the new fans see how far short it falls of its reputation, they'll presumably express their incredulity at the critics' attachment to it; which will lead to further escalation, and the reputation spreading of how toxic and insular Marathon fans are.

Meanwhile, on the development side, assuming optimistically that it thrives, eventually all new scenarios will be informed by the new lore. People will complain about how it closed off unknowns that were fun to explore, but you can't turn back the clock. Others will accuse authors of ignorance when a scenario doesn't follow the latest lore, without bothering to check when the scenario was first written versus when the relevant lore dropped. And of course authors will put digs at the opposing side into their work wherever they think they can get away with it.

Then there'll be the standard conflicts of any live-service game community; over dropped arcs, "retcons", content removals, exploits, gameplay changes, broken promises and so on. All this has happened before, and it will all happen again.

I wonder whether this place will finally get attention from the people who exploit non-secure HTTP.

All in all, not likely to play or care much about the new game, but mildly surprised that it's really happening. Back to doing other things.
