Technically it was a tie between Marathon and Rise of the Triad: the latter's shareware demo, The HUNT Begins came out the same day as Marathon only a couple of hours after it. The main difference is that all non rocket launcher (or non magic) weapons in ROTT had infinite ammo and the pistols would be forgotten about as soon as you found an MP41.
