and ten percent of the entire martian population has to be more than 500, putting the whole population at at least 5,000 before the 3 month coup.
Just to be sadistic, I'll think like a computer and say that 500 starving martians getting killed in 5 seconds means that 100 martians were getting slaughtered for every second of that three months. For simplicity's sake, I'm assuming these are Earth's lunar months, because figuring out what the heck a martian month would be with two moons is something I don't want to tackle for this. So a month is 30 earth days. 3 months is 90 days. One day has 24 hours. An hour is 60 minutes. A minute is 60 seconds. So....
100 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 90 = 777600000.
.... 0_0

777,600,000 represents ten percent of Mars's population. (Is it a coincidence it's seven hundred seventy seven million?)
That, times ten, is 7,776,000,000. So, it's well over 7 billion. That's pretty close to the population of Earth now. I was expecting to get an absurd number but that's actually a pretty realistic.
Of course, we have to subtract the 777,600,000 that died after the coup, leaving us with a remaining population of... 7,000,000,000.
Seven Billion exactly.
