What both of those games had adding to atmosphere was a claustrophobic sense of paranoia; the maze-like structure you're in besides being infested with hostiles are dark, disorienting, and foreboding. The sites are isolated and rescue is out of the question, your back is against the wall and the only escape is forward progression though doing so introduces you to stranger and more dangerous opponents.

M2 had much more a sense of light and spaciousness which I think complemented the later, darker underground levels rather well.
