Eh... back when I played the good ol' original ROM dump of EB0 in 2000 I got a heavy impression that love causes physical pain to Giegue's species. Maria even hints that singing to him elicited something contrary to a positive reaction. The prayers of hope from Ness's friends damaging Giygas seems to support this.

Why did this alien species decide to abduct a nanny for their universal cosmic destroyer? I don't know. What the heck is the Mani mani statue, and how many hands did it pass through to get from point A to B to C? These plot threads that should have expository depth just... don't get explained. Mother 3 is the only game that explains its important plot threads coherently. I wish we'd get some concrete statements from Itoi about them.

I would hazard a guess that Mani Mani is a vessel for Giygas's evil and it began by influeicing X. Agerate, then Pokey and Carpainter, then Monitoli, but it's influence never fully left Pokey after it was destroyed. Giygas could have put it under the meteorite from the past.
