Yeah, I've only recently played the mother games; all translated versions of the Japanese ones, and my Mother 2 copy is a literal translation.

As for the fetus theory, you are right, it's bollocks. The fetus effect in the background was just an optical illusion:

We all know by now that Gyiyg in Mother 2: Giyyg Strikes Back is actually based on a hand "squeezing a woman's breast and making a ball shape" that Shigesato saw in a nightmare he had as a child about kenpei to barabara shibijin.
