The Halo concept was actually from Larry Niven's Ringworld books in his Known Space universe, much like how the feline Kzin aliens of that book inspired the bad guys from Wing Commander; except that the Ringworld was much bigger and harder to get around on, it orbited a star instead of a gas giant, and was in terrible disrepair; with external meteor punctures giving the illusion of oversized mountains and plants that could redirect sunlight into lasers to burn anything that threatened them. Its night cycle was also faked by using giant "Shadow squares" roped together with indestructible cables that could slice through anything while still being flexible.
