In the case of Narcogen et al, their initial foray into MineCraft was to ultimately build an approximation of the Marathon, which they had begun to achieve. Their other approach to MineCraft, as well as other games, is a much broader gaming experience than just Marathon or Bungie. Their focus is games which can be played cooperatively and are inclusive of the OS X platform.
They play games which I'm not at all interested in, as well as those which of course I'd enjoy playing. As for the sandbox games out there which allow you to build and modify the environment; there is a lot of general interest in such games out there now.
I'm hoping that the "new Marathon" will see the light of day at Bungie and that it will natively include the ability to play cooperatively on a Mac.
