I don't remember the exact quote, but it was from Janor Hypercleats and it was something along the lines of "Last thing I remember I was in sixth grade smoking marijuana for the first time."
Another quote I saw scrawled in the condensation on a school bus window: WHAT'S TIME TO PIGS? Can't remember the name of the kid who wrote it. Don't know if it was an original thought or if he was quoting someone else.
The endless wash of moments carries some of the details away...but some things manage to last.
Hooray for the blue triangular box, designed to force retailers to stock the game face out even though Bungie didn't pay extra for that. The blue triangular box so often crushed by those same retailers who saw through Bungie's clever scheme and shelved the box sideways, and if they had to shove it in and squash the one side oh who cares it's just a Mac game.
Hooray for that bruised blue box and everything inside it — not just the disks and the sticker and the shout out to Eddie's green sauce, but the imagination and the ambition and the wit and the work of a handful of people who wanted to make something cool. It contained everything that was beautiful about that time and that place, and the beauty may have faded over twenty years but enough remains to stir the blood of those with eyes to see.
We all saw it, and we all remember — all of us with different bits in and out of focus. And that's kind of beautiful too — because it's only when we come together that the full picture comes into view.
