To be honest I'm not sure, just repeating something I heard ages ago, which was realted to your question.
There is also an idea that for some reason his corpse was kept, resulting in the battleroids that later became the security officer.
It is possible that the character in Marathon isn't the character in PiD, sort of like Eternal's theory for the character.
