I think he was joking. "True 3D" games are "4D" in the sense that Marathon is "5D", except that Marathon doesn't really make the full use of the third dimension, instead using it's "5D" technology to fake it... so really Marathon is 4.5D (2.5D space + 1D time + 1D overlap = 4.5D). Which still puts it 0.5D ahead of modern "true 3D" (plus 1D time) games. ;-)
