In Response To: Re: Maturity and Internet Forums (Aaron Sikes) : Fobo, don't feel old. Ryoko, the world is full of stupid little berks. It's a
First of all: goran, I'm sorry the point of your thread got completely hijacked. I admire people like you that produce quality work and have the steadfastedness needed to perservere when there are so many that just feel entitled to free stuff.
Otherwise, I completely agree with Aaron.
I don't post often in forums in general. It's part of the same reason I do not have a web journal (I refuse to call them blogs). The internet has enough people saying things that are completely and utterly redundant, and often just downright stupid. So I try to reserve my posts to something that amounts to some kind of a meaningful contribution. I bring this up, because it ties in to the argument that a forum format needs to support a large number of posts/contributions. I dispute the argument with saying that albeit logistically necessary, and philosphically arguable, the practical need for huge amounts of posts should be curtailed by the fact that in all likelyhood whatever it is you (the generic you) want to say, is probably better left unsaid. i.e. The signal to noise ratio throughout online forums is, and will probably always be favoring noise.
So now that I've effectively invalidated my post, I'll add that I have many reasons to prefer WebBBS, and while it has shortcomings (most of which are under the hood re: administration and limited new support), we all know from experience that both the story forum, and the M:R forum, both of which are WebBBS, have survived pretty well the huge influx of posts (maybe not 1000 a day) that occured in various events: The Glyphs, the M:R puzzles, game releases etc.
In conclusion...you can sort and organize posts in a hundred different ways (really, you can)...trees and sorts (the main distictions between WebBBS and the rest) are some of the easiest ways to discern long lists of info. In the end, the only thing that really counts is how much of it is worth reading. I think the story forum is a rare place worth reading, and WebBBS does not hinder that in the least, for me.
