All very true. Still, I don't think we can claim any great amount of success in this regard. Given the current state of things, any advances that can be claimed are tenuous at best.

: generation forgets what it was really like when they were a kid (both
: their own actions and their environment), idealizes their youth (both
: their own generation's behavior and the general quality of things 'back
: then'), and then berates the new generation and all of their things for

That's one thing I cherish so much about coming into parenthood at the time that I did. I'm close enough, I think, to my own youth that I'm able to appreciate my stepdaughter's behavior as pretty much duplicating what I did when I was her age. My way of being a teenager wasn't any better (or more original) than the way she does things now. It's when I forget that fact that we end up locking horns. Usually we get along pretty well because I'm able to laugh at all the stupid shit she does, or at least lend a sympathetic ear when she gets her bitch on about something.
