Well, anyone could have gotten into that part, because that was the Bungie FanFest which is held at Bungie's E3 booth after hours, so it's open to more than just E3 attendees.
But I also went to E3 in general because I was a multimedia student in a game design class, and our professor got us passes.
And I went in 2001 as well, because at the time I was the cofounder of the ill-fated game company Sphidia. But mostly I went just for the FanFest, and a sneak peak of Halo. (w00t 8 player fragfest on Blood Gulch using 2 Xboxen on 2 projector screens :D).
