orgins of Bernard Strauss?

While looking around in my english textbook, I found an excerpt from the book "Flowers for Algernon." This book is about a mentaly challgend/retarded guy who, through the maveles of medicien, becomes extremly intellegent. Anyway, the doctor (or one of them) that does the experiment is named Strauss. Durandal and charlie in the book have some similarities, other then the man named Strauss; they are raised up beyond their preceived intellgence. Has anyone here read the book? Does charlie go thourgh a sort of rampancy maybe?
Hopefully this hasent been brought up before. If it hasn't, maybe Hamish is listening.
