.LNK is the Windows file type for shortcuts (you know, those things that are like Aliases?)
From Win 98 onwards the two explorers aren't similar... they're THE SAME, use the same DLL's for displaying stuff. Hell, if you change the current path you're at (in windows explorer) to www.google.com, well, guess what happens.
