: Even though I only have a G4, I have 128 MB VRAM, which is the most imporant
: factor, after all, and I decided to try the highest-res textures anyway.
: They really rock, but performance does take a hit. The problem is with
: loading textures - every time a new texture is encountered, there is a
: delay while AO loads it. This is a minimal problem with the 512X512
: textures, but it is a big issue with the 1024X1024 textures on my 1.5 GHz
: G4 PB. Although I prefer not to have a long lag time at the start of every
: level, isn't there some way of making AO automatically load all textures
: then rather than when encountered? That would make the highest-res
: textures playable on any machine with 128 MB VRAM without a loss of
: performance.
It should be possible. It sort of makes me wonder if the "see texture, load texture" thing is connected with the automap "see wall, record wall" thing, but I doubt it. My PC is pretty beefed, so it's really a software fault.
Not that I'm complaining about Aleph One not being good enough to run Doom III sized textures, mind you.
