It's more that the players must be intimately familiar with every aspect of the scenario, having played through it many times and explored it in Forge and other tools. The vast majority of stuff mentioned in a Volunteers post is not a brand-new discovery made during the just-completed Volunteers run through the level; the important part is how it compares to the rest of the game and the rest of the Marathon body of work and how it fits into the larger picture of the scenario.
