Here is the write up at Orbital Arm for a utility that changes the shapes file:
"If you want to change the textures and landscapes in the Win95 PC-version of Marathon 2, M2 Shaper is the only game in town. It allows you to load the textures from your original Marathon 2 shapes file and save them as bitmaps that you can use in your favorite graphics editing program. Version 1.3 has improved color-matching for your imported images."
