That doesn't make any sense...if you try and select the drive to install to and it is greyed out, moving the mouse over the icon should give you a reason why it doesn't want to install...
You can always format and re-install, but you can't partition before formatting..so if you want to keep your stuff, back it up first, format, partition, put OS X on the first partition, and you can chose what you'd like to do with your backed up stuff.
