Todd's actually quite wrong - the domain name is almost irrelevant.
What people like here is the threaded nature of WebBBS, and the access to the existing body of posts. The lack of smiley and signature support is actually a PLUS for most people; it forces posters to focus on CONTENT.
We even wrote this up as a FAQ on the Halo forum (which, as Todd mentions, gets quite a bit more traffic than this one):

The forum software used by a b.org site is, in general, up to the site maintainer; oni.bungie.org, for example, uses iKonBoard, a flat-format forum.
Thanks for the offer - but should our needs ever change, we certainly have the resources to set up other forum types here. We've simply chosen not to.
