It may be speculation, but it makes you think. I think the two universes could be one in the same. The marathon man may not be the master chief, but you may be just a Spartan. There is a 100 year gap in the marathon story where the battles in Halo were taking place. What could have happened over this time period? Maybe a you are a Spartan I?
