Ahh, the undying question. Who do you play as exactly and what is your history? I have been pondering this for quite some time. I read all i could stand about it on the Story page and have created an opinion. Feel free to chime in, add to, or rip appart my argument. I want to know what you guys think. I believe that you are somehow related to the Master Cheif in Halo. In fact, i think that you may in fact BE the master cheif from Halo. Marathon does take place after halo if you look at the dates. Many references refer to you as being not human, while others seem to say that you are. The Spartans were not human, according to many high ranking military officials (if you do not know what i am talking about, read the books). Also, the manual to Marathon states that you killing aliens in the far reaches of space is somewhat familiar to you, almost like a memory that pops into your head. When you beat the vid master challenge in Infinity, you are rewarded by a screen that says you are a long dead military hero reanimated by machines. Could this hero be in fact the master cheif? Only Bungie knows for sure.
