First, to get into the mood, play lots of Marathon. This will get your blood up and steam shooting out your nose. Keep a pencil and paper by your computer and make sketches during moments of inspiration. Download maps and other Marathon files and play some more. Invite some friends over and introduce them to Marathon and get them hooked. Sketch some of the rooms you have been imagining. You will probably want to buy a crossover ethernet cable in case you sucker a friend into trying Marathon net. Once he plays net he is hooked. Scrounge up a hub and some more computers and you and your net buddy can recruit more players for some gut squishin mayhem. Put those sketches together with Forge and test out your new net level with your net buddies. Perfect it and upload the map to a Marathon archive. Spend all your spare time, playing, sketching and sweating the details in Forge. After a particularly awesome grenade hop over a wall down into a gorge behind your foe for a complete surprise assassination with dual triggered MA-75B bullets and grenades that make your friend jump out of his seat, a song will spontaneously burst from your mouth parts as the music notes cascade down onto the sheet music paper.
