Well, to me it seems like the only feasible option. It's doubtful that it took place in the century (or three, or whatever) left blank, seeing as the technology and setting are close, but just not within reach. Granted, 300 years is a long time, but I think they would have informed the Marathon crew or something when they came out of cold sleep. It seems to me that if you are Durandal, and you control the universe, you'd have a little remake of the last universe. You are an insane A.I. after all.
Also, for the longest time I wondered why Cortana mentioned a fourth stage in the Cortana Letters if she never went rampant (I may be wrong, I never actually finished Halo... I stopped on that cursed Library level). The quote is "... between godhood and insanity..." I believe.
So, if I'm right, then it would explain the Marathon logos, Mjolnir Mark V, SPNKR, similar quotes, and even the enemies that seem similar (Pfhor Fighters -> Little Covenant Guys, Pfhor Hunters -> Covenant Hunters, Hulks (Juggernauts also?) -> Those Nasty Blue Guys, Combat B.O.B.s -> Marines) would be justified, as well as the differences in setting (Halo instead of Marathon or Lh'owon).
So... yeah. I'm not the expert, but it seems both feasible and possible. I may be wrong.
