I haven't been playing along with the evil volunteers (shame on me), I seem to recall the place you are talking about but can't remember for certain. My best guess is this:
The platform ascends before it descends, and is set to neither "crush" or "reverse direction". This way, the jug hits the roof, effectively paralysing the platform. Can anyone playing along here confirm this?
