The otomatone looks more like something that Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes would play at Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina.
The PID Alien Pipes are more akin to bagpipes right down to the description of "blow into the hole which looks most like the mouthpiece." Pretty much a standing joke when it comes to this musical instrument.
I think the really interesting part is that they apparently remind you of a book that you once read as a child.
Find the book and we may solve the Riddle of the Alien Pipes.
