Pathways Into Darkness Is Hard!

So I just started playing Pathways for the first time ever (Marc Levin's OSX port), and I'm terrible. I guess I'm one of those young'uns raised on twitchy shooters, like Marathon. I can't for the life of me—or my avatar—dance and dodge around even the harmless Headless with any sort of consistency. I suck particularly hard with the default keyboard controls, and as far as I can tell there's no way to change the key bindings and no mouse control available.

So, other than relentless practice, are there any tips for success? Any obvious things I'm missing? I don't expect to play like Hopper, but if I could take less than 1 hit every 2 Headless I might make it past Lock and Load before Sunday afternoon.
