In Response To: Tour of Duty - Waterloo Waterpark *LONG* (PerseusSpartacus)

Nice intro. Glad to see you included the Windows differences - two shotguns, one level is crazy indeed. Considering if you miss the one here under normal circumstances, you won't get a shotgun for a long time to come, while ammo for it will make quite a stack in the meantime!

: After it fades away, we drop into a large, square room. Above us are bars
: crossing from each corner diagonally. To the left and right, there's
: windows overlooking areas with... water? There's water here? Yippee!
: Above us, there's a big purplish night sky. There's also some nice ambient
: sound. No music though, unfortunately.

Water you're okay with, phew :). Now to wait for a few levels and see if you've changed your mind about lava!

: The BoBs are generally quick to mop up the Fighters, unless on Total Carnage,
: in which case they'll deal significant damage before getting beaten to
: death with those pointed sticks . At that point you can switch to Fists;
: and now it's accurate to say 'Fists' instead of 'Fist', because you can
: actually hold up both of your fists, instead of just one!

The BoBs wipe out the Fighters easily even on TC here.

Also nice to note, now that we have them, the fancy XBLA graphics ups for M2!

: Before we progress any further, we should look at a map, designed by yours
: truly:

Okay that answers that question! I'd get you to have a look at your map for Ex Cathedra in advance - there's a 2x charger marked as a 1x, a 1x charger not marked at all, and a few letter indicators that aren't really all that interesting - oxygen refills? :)

: Meet the Drone, referred to as a 'Hummer' inside Forge. They are M2's
: equivalent of the old Wasps, albeit slightly less annoying and a little
: more resilient. Also, they just look cooler.

I was thinking of them as a cross between wasps and MADDs - after all, we do get some that are on our side in a little while :). Also - on Ex Cathedra there's a PICT about them: "Security/Defense Remote Units". I'm not sure if the text on that one has been deciphered; I can only ever make out a few words in those damned things.

: This is the first Pfhor terminal we ever find. What's interesting is that it
: shows the sky as a bright yellow - the daytime landscape. However, the
: actual landscape for the level is a dark purple - the nighttime landscape.
: Also, remember the name "Hlford". It'll pop up again three
: levels from now.

Ahh thanks for the reminder of the name's origin :).

: Yes, this is a Shotgun. Specifically, a WSTE-M5 Combat Shotgun. Around is it
: a bunch of ammo for it that will actually teleport back after a little
: while if you stick around, albeit only once. So let me get this straight:
: last game we only got a new weapon on the second level, and that was just
: one weapon. Now suddenly we get not one, but two new weapons on the very
: first level? What on earth?!

The ammo comes in if you go incredibly close to the edge of the platform you use to jump out of this area, and then return. I'm sure there was a way to get more ammo in the main stairwell area as well, I remember seeing it at least in the demo/preview, but have never been able to figure it out.

: In all honesty, M2 is infinitely more forgiving than M1: absolutely no
: suicide traps, lots of weapons, ammo and health laying around if you know
: where to look, and fewer puzzles. In my opinion, this is not a good
: thing. If anything, it waters down the experience. With no fear of running
: out of ammo and just about everything in the world (except maybe a Wave
: Motion Cannon) at my hands from the very start, things just devolve into
: simple hack-and-slash, and the lack of puzzles makes this even more true.
: It's not even that fun hack-and-slash: just sink bullets into those
: baddies like mad until they drop. What a shame.

Yeah that is true to an extent. As regards puzzles, a lot of it is just because Durandal holds our hand much more in this game. As for the difficulty, right near the start you find out that the new magnum can stop a Major Fighter from hitting you at all, even on TC - compare this with the madness that is the introduction to M1 on TC!

: Audience: So now that we've gone to all that effort, can we finally just
: leave?

: Oh, okay, if you insist...

I move we grenade ourselves up to point C on the map first, and collect the ammo through the secret door to the room to where it seems all secrets lead.

...

As said, a leisurely introduction to the new game, a few new concepts: magnum-toting BoBs, water, hanging switches, and double-sided ones even, ammo that teleports in, Pfhor terminals and uplink chips.

Okay I'll post my script for Slings & Arrows in a day or two :).
