Grenade hopping still works in M1A1. Just not grenade climbing (i.e. wall climbing using multiple grenades to gain ever increasing height).

Are you referring to the raised alcove on Bigger Guns? The one near the start with the two invisible Compilers? You should still be able to reach that with a run and a well timed grenade hop.
