Actually, Weland can only edit levels. A separate tool, Atque, is used for merging. It handles physics, terminal scripts, embedded Lua and MML, and TEXT resources for the old way of embedding MML.

There's no way to do this, but Atque converts maps into modern formats when splitting, if it can; and handles them on merge. So you can just work with BMP, JPEG, and WAV/AIFF.
