storyline in the dream levels

storyline in the dream levels

has anyone taken a long look at the story that starts in "Where Monsters are in Dreams" and continues throughout all the "dream" levels?
i find it rather interesting. who is it about? what exactly is going on? what is with the gum, ammonia, guys in suits, sanitation workers and the word "durability?" seems to change pace fairly quickly, much like a dream would but who is all this referring to? is it relevant to the game's story or is it something that the developers decided to throw in just to create atmosphere/someone begged them to have their story put in the game somehow?
