Few Remember Failed Marathon Music ARG That Never Was
Long before "I Love Bees," Bungie dabbled in a prototype alternate reality game to popularize their first-person Macintosh shooter Marathon. Simply called "Marathon Music," this 1995 web site featured large buttons with a 7 pixel bevel and other significant clues to the story of Marathon.
On the surface the web site appeared to be devoted to the music of Daniel Blaisdell (an anagram of "ballad lines lied"). However, underneath the surface were secret messages encoded in his songs - even the song titles provided clues.
Unfortunately, few ever saw the site.
"We really screwed up on that one," said an anonymous Bungie source. "The first big problem was it was 1995 and hardly anyone had an internet connection," he explained.
Furthermore, an employee who would go on to mislabel Marathon Infinity disks failed to mail out press announcements for the ARG.
"He used the wrong stamps, now stop following me," confided our unnamed source.
Inexplicably, the Marathon Music website has re-appeared at http://www.marathonmusic.net/
Does this presage Bungie's return to the Marathon universe?
Bungie had no comment for this story.
