Hmm, those files are different than the ones I created using QuickTime 2.5; they sound the same, but mine are much smaller.
QuickTime 2.5 offers a "Music to Standard MIDI" export option. Take a movie from Marathon Music Exploder and open it with Movie Player 2.5. Then choose "Export..." and select "Music to Standard MIDI" in the pulldown.
QuickTime 2.0 lacked MIDI export, but it could convert and load MIDI tracks. However, 2.0 messes up the instrument pairings! Fortunately, QT 2.0/2.1 had a nice instrument browser that went missing in 2.5.
To play with this, open the MIDI file with QuickTime 2.0 installed in Movie Player or another QT-capable app. (Movie Player 2.5 works fine with QuickTime 2.0, so if you're swapping out the extensions you can stick with this one application.) The "Open" button will read "Convert..." when you have a MIDI highlighted -- click that, and then "Options..." on the next dialog. There you get a nice list of the tracks, and a menu to change the instruments used.
The Story music page has some instrument mapping info (look for "Keith Palmer" on the page), but it's not very helpful in finding the right QT 2.0 instruments. That's left an an exercise for the reader, I'm afraid. Bonus points to whoever can tell me why some instruments are italicized and others aren't in these pulldowns.
