You know, it's always perplexed me why people think it's the dream level that you need to do something different on. I mean, if you're walking down a street and you reach a dead end and a guy there tells you "yeah there's nothing more this way, you need to go back and take a different road. here, I'll give you a lift back down the street..." would you then proceed to walk back down the same path to the dead end and just look for some way around that guy? It seems obvious to me that it's the level you're sent back to that you'd need to do something different on, not the dead-end level you're sent back from; the guy is giving you a lift back down the dead-end street, to the fork in the road where it began.
