In Response To: A new question... (Mykas)

: I noticed a strange-looking pillar in that area of the lava, near the stated
: save point, but fail to find the switch (probably an hidden one?) that
: would move it.

The switch you want to hit is on the ledge above and to the right of the Pattern Buffer. Once you hit the switch, jump off the ledge, and save at the PB. The pillar lowers slowly, so don't feel you have to rush. In fact, once the pillar has lowered all the way into the lava, wait a couple of seconds after that, and then jump into the lava. Grab the item, run back over and stand where the pillar lowered into the lava. As the pillar goes back up, jump off the pillar and back into the room with the PB.
